The Lavinia Ruth

A family of bonnets spanning the late 1840's to the early 1860's. The bavolet juts from the bonnet points to the middle of the bonnet and rounds the crown. Available in In silk over buckram  from $130.  Straw forms available in 1/2" hemp or paper braid for $85.  Straw bonnet lined with bavolet from $115.

The Juliana Rose

The Juliana Rose appeared in the fashion pages in 1854.  Initially low brimmed, the bonnet sat  far back on the head.  The brim rose as the 1860’s approached.


The Eliza Coretta

a three-piece bonnet with a flat back.  Style includes the circle shape popular in the very early 1860's and the first spoon bonnet which appeared in 1862.

The Clara Christine

exemplified by a two piece blocked crown and flared brim, appeared in the fashion pages as early as 1854.  In the early sixties, the brim flared more over the forehead creating a spoon shaped profile. Late in 1864, the empire bonnet appeared.  The style achieved increasing  popularity as favor of the spoon bonnet began to wane and was the favored style of bonnet in the mid-1860's.

a three-piece bonnet with a flat back,  the classic fashionable spoon bonnet of the 1860’s.

A soft crowned bonnet of the late fifties and early sixties which became the popular fanchon which maintained popularity into the 1870's.

In Practical Millinery
In about 1861, bonnet brims rose becoming the spoon bonnet introduced in 1862. The spoon shape rose to ridiculous proportions throughout early 1860's, finally being replaced by  more modest lower brimmed empire bonnets and fanchons very late and after the war.
